Setting up your first MMDVM hotspot can be a little confusing if this is your first time.
This is what i discovered on my Journey into DMR
I purchased a ready made MMDVM a few years back from our AliExpress friends. I paid about £38 including shipping to England, quite reasonable i thought. A couple of weeks later the item arrived.

Straight out of the box, i connected the MMDVM to power and switched on. I waited 5 minutes and nothing showed up on the network, i checked the router DHCP client list, nothing!
Save yourself some headaches and get a Micro USB to Ethernet adapter. My router, being a bit more recent, had a security protocol layer stopping the MMDVM connecting. I did not bother wasting any time of trying to debug this issue. I connected an adapter to the inside Micro USB port. Connect power to the outter most Port. Switch it on and be patient, mine took a few minutes to power up, detect the Ethernet link and it started to work.
You do have to be on the same network (LAN) to be able to login to the web interface on the MMDVM but once setup, it needs very little maintenance and is often a set and forget device. Once you login to the web interface, you need to head on over to Brandmeister to get login details. The MMDVM web interface is quite intuitive if you only need a basic setup.
There are excellent forums available where you can obtain help should you need it. I used mine for DMR, i do not have Dstar, NXDN or YSF. One digital mode is quite enough. Once setup i configured a channel on my Ailunce HD1 for the hotspot. I chose to use 438.800 (UK) and set the power to minimum. Once done and having set my Brandmeister account up, i was able to use the contacts list on the HD1 to place a private DMR call to Reece (M7DVX) and we ran some audio configuration tests with good results. The DMR audio via the hotspot was clear and very well rounded with some surprisingly good “Depth”
Things start to sound “Robotic” when you use DMR repeaters at each end of a DMR call but still readable and the feature set of the HD1 talking to a Baofeng 1701 running OpenGD77 is quite nice. I enjoyed my introduction to the world of DMR but i often use it via repeaters at the time of writing this article as i am not spending a lot of time at home. I prefer to be out and about on the hill tops (02 June 2026 as i write this).
Would i recommend this? Well, that depends on what budget you want to chuck at it. There are many “Hotspots” available from around the world, this is a budget one and i have enjoyed using it. There are better, fuller featured versions out there that are packed full of features but you will pay more for the pleasure.
Whilst searching around the net, i came across this that gave me a headache just trying to read through it: You might find something of use or you might not. Feel free to leave a comment down below if you wish to add anything.
