I needed a half decent “Field Day” soldering Iron so that Disasters could be fixed on the go. I had been looking at the Pinecil and some other well known brands but came across the Finirsi HS-02A which came with extra tips and a hard shell carry case.
Included in the package was exactly what you see above and below. The Iron can be powered by USB-C or with the Barrel adapter (both supplied). The first thing i noticed was the weight of the Iron. It was not especially heavy but was extremely well balanced in my “Spas-Hand” which meant that i did not feel fatigued after using it for extended periods.

The Iron does have a slightly softened Triangular Grip which is really quite comfortable and offers damn good grip, meaning that it is difficult, even with a sweaty hand, to slip and make contact with the “Ouchy” end. Having been a user of several Butane Portable Soldering Irons in the past, i was not in a rush to make that same mistake again.

The tip, after use, slides into the protective Aluminium sheath which then rotates and locks into place. The tip does not make contact with the sides which means as soon as you are done and the Iron is switched off, you can put the cap on and bung it back in the Toolbox without too much worry.
The Tip is capable of reaching the pre-set temperature in a matter of a few seconds. I kid you not, if you are holding the tip when you switch it on, you will be letting go very angrily and very quickly. Trust me, i know!
Loads of different tips are available from the usual suspects in two different tip sizes.
C210 Fine SMD / microsoldering, ~40 W 66 mm
C245 General purpose, up to ~130 W 90 mm
C115 / C120 Not JBC — Seal QD / Miniware TS series ~70–80 mm
HS-02A → C245 format (90 mm tips, general purpose)
HS-02B → C210 format (66 mm tips, low-power microsoldering)
Ensure that you are buying the correct suffix version as the shaft sizes are different.
If you purchase the extra tips you will normally get:
K – 4.5 mm knife
KU – 2.7 mm knife
JS – 0.25 mm bent conical
I – 0.6 mm conical
C2 – 2.2 mm bevel
B – 1 mm conical
All of these are excellent choices for my Micro Soldering but you may want to go for something a little more capable.
All in all, i have thoroughly enjoyed using my HS-02 and i look forward to getting my hands on the HS-03 which has an integrated 18650 cell so truly portable!
“One of the best, if not THE best portable Iron i have ever had.“
